Our Lady of Leffe Abbey

The historic Leffe Abbey, near Dinant, is the birthplace of Leffe beer. While the beer itself is no longer brewed within the abbey walls, the site offers an immersive experience into the history of Leffe. The Maison Leffe museum and tasting room provide an excellent opportunity to sample their renowned abbey-style beers.

The history of Leffe beer dates back centuries, but its modern revival began in 1952 when Father Abbot Nys met brewer Albert Lootvoet in Overijse. Faced with financial challenges, the Abbey partnered with Lootvoet to bring back its brewing heritage using traditional methods. That same year, Leffe Dark was successfully reintroduced, quickly gaining popularity. As demand grew and the range expanded to four varieties, substantial investments were required.

In 1977, financial backing from Brasserie Artois led to production moving to Mont-Saint-Guibert. A decade later, a merger between Brasseries Artois and Piedboeuf created Brasserie Interbrew, which continues to brew Leffe in collaboration with the Abbey Fathers. In 2004, Interbrew merged with Brazilian Ambev, forming InBev, which rebranded as InBev Belgium NV in 2005. Today, Leffe remains one of the most beloved Abbey beers, staying true to its rich brewing traditions.

Further solidifying its reputation in the specialty beer segment, the brewery pioneered the launch of the first fully organic spelt and buckwheat beers, certified by the European organization CERTISYS. The origins of Chimay beer date back to the summer of 1850, when a small group of Trappist monks settled on the rugged Scourmont plateau near Chimay.
